New York

It was absolutely gorgeous outside! The crowds seemed to disappear into the morning sun. The buildings were so tall and sparkled and gleamed with such intensity I was blinded. As we walked along the sidewalk, which I took note to be 32nd street, I could smell all types of smells, all in one breath. Hot coffee, trash, oils stains from the street, grilled bacon, bus exhaust, (Which, by the way, is awful!) old fish water from a market, some steam and other things that I just didn't recognize.

The first thing I noticed was that there were American flags flying everywhere! As people walked by I saw that they had small flags in their bookbags or on their coat lapels. The people all seemed very serious, almost sad. Every telephone pole we passed had paper flyers stapled to them with pleas for missing people. I was very confused and worried that getting lost might be something that just happens to people when they are in Manhattan, or like myself, visiting. But Jenn told me that these people were missing from the big buildings that come down. I just didn't understand I I how so many could be missing so Jenn let me read some papers she had in her office. (Which, is a whole floor of stables! Well, she calls them cubicles, but they look like open roofed stables to me. Of course, I had to get some shots of the sea of stables) Needless to say, after seeing that paper, I was very very sad.

12 noon: Jenn knew that the paper would upset me, more so than the deer heads and bear skins displayed in the office. (She works for Field and Steam Magazine) She promised that she would show me something that would make my heart soar and my patriotism and my eagerness to be a New Yorker, if only for a few days, swell within me. She took me to the corner of 34th and 5th Avenue. The corner of the Empire State Building!

It is MAGNIFICENT! It is so tall and so huge!!!!! I was in complete awe at the building and at being an American today! There were so many people taking pictures and no one seemed to mind that I was taking pictures too, Look at how tall it is!!!! I couldn't even see the top of it!!!! We walked around the building to get better views and took many shots. We went into the souvenir shops and bought a few postcards. I bought two postcards of the World Trade Center when they stood proud in the city. 0ne for my journal so all my hosts can see how beautiful they were, and one for you mom to have. I'm going to mail that soon.
